Colonial
Colonial homes are old houses that represent early European occupation of America. Most colonial homes are rectangular and two-storey with side gable roofs with dormers. Some models even have transom windows or exterior details for style.
Colonial houses are often white clapboard, have a flat gable roof, shuttered double-hung windows, and an old-fashioned portico in the front entryway – another American classic still valued today.
Colonial home colours include soft hues like softer grays, blues, ochres and whites. Wood elements and rug area rugs are great décor choices. Other designs might include old scrolling design, French toile wallpapers with flower designs and plaid wovens. And, you also like the style with the old classic lighting like pendant lamps or beautiful sconces.
Victorian
Victorian houses bring to mind the architecture of Queen Anne, which reigned in US housing markets between 1860 and 1900. Queen Anne homes can be found everywhere in America – in San Francisco’s “Painted Ladies” or old neighborhoods in Louisville, New Orleans and Cape May.
The Victorian age: technological developments in building materials that gave architects more room to embellish the home; and a middle class that was keen to flaunt its riches. All of which sounded highly ornamental.
They usually had fancy exteriors with their curvy windows and intricate carvings, and inside these houses there would be spaces for various types of entertainments such as music, reading and play. The only downside was that floor plans didn’t usually exist at the time.
Craftsman
Craftsman home design is simple but handcrafted to give a very pleasing look and is often found in regions that value nature.
We should also give credit to Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene for the birth of this lovely home style that was created during the Arts and Crafts period. One such house, designed in Pasadena in 1908 – Gamble House – owes a lot to English Arts and Crafts and oriental wooden houses.

Most people are used to the bungalow having big front porches and spacious floorplans and that kind of house plan was extremely popular all over the US and became highly sought after at the end of the 20th century. They have a design that melds form and functionality, and are a wonderful choice for the home with young children.
It usually involves a gable roof with eaves that extend, cedar shingles or stone siding for siding, single-pane windows with fewer trimming and single-pane windows with minimal trim, and simple windows with wood or vinyl siding.
Bungalow houses offer cosy comfort at affordable heating and cooling rates3. Bungalow homes located in residential areas of small towns encourage residents to feel connected to the community and have pride in their neighbourhood. Moreover, they are lightweight and so great for older people who want to downsize4. Also, these kind of mini home is very flexible to suit individual requirements of the occupants.
Farmhouse
Farmhouse home design and construction have over time become popular because they mix a combination of rustic style with modern conveniences. Choose this design for both new homes and remodels and use natural wood flooring, beams, and stone fireplaces for a warm interior.
The furniture re-imagined as farmhouse can include salvaged wood signs, mason jars, quilts lined on a single vertical shelf and other utilitarian accoutrements that underscore its use. The neutral hues will keep things casual and provide some space for accents to pop.
Adding industrial accessories is another excellent way to pair with farmhouse style. Metal lighting and hardware also fuses the old and new together, but use sparingly so that you don’t look too mechanical. Complement the rigid and soft surfaces of a room with fabrics with eyelet curtains, oval braided rugs and knotted sheers tied at the center as accessories.
